School Closure
Occasionally, school may be cancelled in an effort to assure student safety. One possible reason for closing school is if extreme weather conditions make for hazardous travel. Examples include blizzards, freezing rain, or dangerously cold wind chills. In most situations, area road crews will be able to maintain roadways in a manner that allows for safe travel. Other emergency situations that could cause schools to close include conditions on campus that prevent buildings from opening. A prolonged power outage affecting school buildings for example or hazardous environmental condition in town may necessitate the closure of school. A parent can choose to keep his or her child(ren) at home if in his or her judgment the particular conditions cause that parent concern, whether or not school is closed. The school need only receive notice directly from the parent for attendance purposes.
Two-Hour Delay
In situations when conditions that might otherwise cause school to close are expected to improve during the morning, a two (2) hour delay to the start of the regular school day may be applied. In this scenario, the weather or emergency condition would be reassessed and a second notification made – only if school is closed for the remainder of the day. If a second notification is not received, then school would open after the initial two (2) hour delay.
Early Dismissal
There may be times when weather conditions deteriorate or an emergency situation develops after our children and young adults are already in school. Depending on the severity of the conditions, the likelihood of improvement, and/or nature of the situation, our schools may either provide shelter or cancel classes/activities for the remainder of the day. If classes are cancelled during the day, then the students would be sent home before the end of the regular school day. It is important to have an emergency back-up plan in the event of an emergency closing. Your plan at home should include the name of a family member or other adult you trust to supervise your child(ren) in the event of an emergency when you cannot.
When school is closed for any reason, all after-school programs and evening events are cancelled as well.
