Group Information
At Peru Central High School, National Honor Society (NHS) is a club that offers a unique opportunity for a student to both express and build his or her character as a valued member of the community. A student must fulfill certain requirements before being eligible to apply for NHS.
Scholarship: In order for a student to be eligible for NHS, the student must be in either eleventh or twelfth grade. The student must also obtain an overall grade point average of 88% or higher. Outside of this measurable quality of scholarship, the student must exemplify traits of Leadership, Service, and Character.
Leadership: A student who exercises leadership is resourceful in proposing new solutions, applying principles, and making suggestions. A student leader must also promote activities and improve civic life in the school or community. A leader is committed to delegating responsibility, encouraging positive behavior in others, and demonstrating academic initiative. A leader at Peru Junior-Senior High School must demonstrate leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities.
Service: The student who serves is one who is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude. When it comes to service, a student may serve within the school or in the outside community. NHS is looking for a student who engages in activities such as a Scout program, church groups, Academic Assistance Lab, Reading Partners, or other volunteer programs for the aged, poor, or disadvantaged. When volunteering, a student with good service is always willing to help with whatever is needed and performs tasks with a positive attitude. Upon being inducted into NHS, a student must complete two service hours per month, which may include volunteering at a local soup kitchen, working at the SPCA, or helping at any community functions. Students are also expected to participate in multiple club community service projects throughout the school year.
Character: A student of character is the final trait that a NHS member must display. A person must embody the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and reliability, as well as demonstrate courtesy, concern, and respect for others. The student must adhere to instruction and rules, both in and out of the classroom.
